Painting Syllabus (2021)
Attendance: Remember even though we are in distance learning you are still “in class everyday”. For attendance you are required to show your face on zoom for a quick check in, after that I will instruct you on how I will conduct the class for that day. Sometimes I will have you on zoom for most of the class if I’m teaching something new or doing a demo. Sometimes it might just be a work day and you will be able to shut off your zoom and just create! I will most likely stay on zoom for the whole class period during work time so you can pop in with a question.
Tech Issues: Students having trouble getting into class should attempt to reach out to their teacher first, letting them know of the situation via email. If notifying their teacher via email is not possible, students should call the MSA attendance line to alert office staff that there is an issue. If you have an issue with your laptop, after notifying your teacher, please email Justin Gehring at [email protected] or call 651-208-8797 (leave a message if there is no answer). He will either work to troubleshoot the problem remotely, or make arrangements to swap the device.

Class Fee: There is a $15.00-dollar class fee for materials expenses, this should be paid at the beginning of the school year when you pay other school related fees through the Business Office in Building B with Mr. La Casse.

You will be presenting an artist to the class along with your replica painting so we will learn about many painters and styles/movements.
Written assignments
Yes, there will be a few written assignments. Don’t worry; I will not assign a 10-page research paper. I will however assign various written articles to be read and questions to be answered about the articles. This will increase your knowledge about various art concepts and vocabulary.
Grading:
Grading is based on art production, time/materials management, participation, daily work, quizzes, written work and homework. There will be completion of both individual and group projects required for this course. Your grades for this course will be weighted in Skyward with art production being the most important (40%). My projects will usually be graded on a 30 point scale with 100-90% being in the A range.
Grading Scale:
100 - 93 A 76 - 73 C
92 - 90 A- 72 - 70 C-
89 - 87 B+ 69 - 67 D+
86 - 83 B 66 - 63 D
82 - 80 B- 62 - 60 D-
79 - 77 C+ 59 - 0 F
100-90% (A, A-) outstanding work, excellent work, completed as assigned
89-80% (B+, B, B-) great work, good work, completed as assigned
79-70% (C+, C, C-) completed as assigned, completed, completed but needs work
69-60% (D+, D, D-) unfinished, needs a lot of work, late
59-0% (F) very poorly done, not completed, very late, half credit
Late Work:
Late work will be docked 2 pt. per day that it is late (unless otherwise stated by me, or if you talk with me a head of time because you were sick, had an excused absence, etc.) I can be flexible with due dates if you don’t abuse that privilege.
**Reminder** In Skyward if there is an * that means it is not graded yet and therefore not missing and is not yet affecting your grade…YET!
E-Learning Day:
In the event of an E-Learning Day, you should go to the class webpage at 10:00am to find the day’s activity and assignment. If you are unable to do so, you must contact me prior to the start of the next regular class period.
Plagiarism and Cheating:
Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing another person’s work will receive a zero for that assignment. The student maybe be asked to do the assignment again for half credit. You can help your classmates but don’t do their work for them.

- Fire – Follow me and evacuate to the assigned area behind building B. Once there, gather for attendance.
- Tornado - Evacuate to hallway outside classroom. Once there, assume safety position with head facing the wall.
- Modified lockdown - Remain in your classroom and continue with class as normal. Do not exit class until all clear is given.
- Lock down - Gather in the safest area of the room away from the doors and windows, we go into the closet. Remain silent and do NOT use cellular devices. Remain in the classroom until all clear is given.

Things you will need:
- A folder and notebook for sketching ideas and recording glazes used
- You will also need to come to school to pick up the class materials assigned by the teacher (clay, etc.)
Watercolor
- Color wheel (mixing all colors on the color-wheel along with tints and shades)
- Techniques (using various materials to create special effects)
- Shapes/Forms (painting shapes with value to create 3D forms)
- Trees (painting from observation using textures and shapes to create real looking trees
- Landscapes (using techniques to paint real looking landscapes)
- Final Landscape (create a realistic looking landscape of your choice.)
- Color wheel (mixing all colors on the color-wheel along with tints and shades).
- Still Life (using previous knowledge of painting shapes/forms to paint accurate depiction of a still life)
- Wallpaper flower (using a strip of a painting and finishing the rest of it (replicating the style/colors, etc. as well as changing it into your own style)
- Famous Artist replica painting (recreating a famous painting, copying style/colors of original, use a grid to map-out exact placement of shapes) and an Artist inspired piece (choose an artist to research and create a painting in a similar style of that artist) an artist presentation will also go along with this.
- Pixelated self-portrait
- Possible class collaboration painting
- Citra-Solv collage (creating a mix-media piece using a solvent, glue, magazine cut-outs, and India ink)
